Government of Canada Accepts Recommendation to

Impose 209 Conditions on Northern Gateway Proposal

bcspiritbear.com/blog

Proponent must demonstrate how conditions will be met, undertake further consultations with Aboriginal communities as part of next steps in regulatory process

Ottawa
Natural Resources Canada

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, today issued the following statement outlining the Government of Canada’s decision after the Joint Review Panel’s independent review of the Northern Gateway Pipelines proposal to construct and operate two parallel pipelines to transport crude oil between Bruderheim, Alberta and Kitimat, British Columbia, and a marine terminal at the port of Kitimat. The proposal was submitted by Northern Gateway Pipelines Limited Partnership to the National Energy Board (NEB) for an environmental assessment and regulatory examination in 2010. This constituted the beginning of the regulatory process.

The Joint Review Panel for the Northern Gateway Project was an independent body established by the Minister of the Environment and the National Energy Board to review the project. The Panel’s rigorous science-based review included feedback from over 1,450 participants in 21 different communities, reviewing over 175,000 pages of evidence and receiving 9,000 letters of comment. The NEB is responsible for regulating some 73,000 kilometres of pipelines transporting crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products across Canada.

“In December 2013, the Joint Review Panel found that construction and operation of the Northern Gateway Pipelines project is in the public interest, subject to 209 conditions being met by the proponent. After carefully reviewing the report, the Government accepts the independent Panel’s recommendation to impose 209 conditions on Northern Gateway Pipelines’ proposal.

“Today constitutes another step in the process. Moving forward, the proponent must demonstrate to the independent regulator, the NEB, how it will meet the 209 conditions. It will also have to apply for regulatory permits and authorizations from federal and provincial governments. In addition, consultations with Aboriginal communities are required under many of the 209 conditions that have been established and as part of the process for regulatory authorizations and permits. The proponent clearly has more work to do in order to fulfill the public commitment it has made to engage with Aboriginal groups and local communities along the route.”

The National Energy Board will now issue Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity.

Kermodei Bear Visits My Mom

http://bcspiritbear.com/spirit-bear-blog/

Sylvia Johnson – My Mom

Dear Stephanie:
Do you remember the evening Apollo came to visit me? (We lived in the same village with one house in between).

I heard an odd noise outside, so went to have a look. I saw a HUGE WHITE BEAR in my rasp- berry patch.
It looked like a polar bear, but I knew it was ‘your’ Apollo.
You asked me, “Did you get a photo?” I replied, “No, it was too dark.”

There were no berries but Apollo was wiping out leaves like crazy. I rushed inside to get the blaster. One big blast and that monster bear lept into the air — escaping into the back woods. You can have your Kermodei bear, Steph. Thanks. I had enough black bears when we lived in a log cabin, 50 miles from Dawson City, in the Yukon.

Much love, Mom. xoxo

Thanks Mom!

Wet’suwet’en Peoples

(Yinka Dini – People of this Earth)

Fight Against Gas Pipeline

Published on Apr 8, 2014

“Grassroots Wet’suwet’en and allies unite to say No Fracked Gas Pipelines!

Leaders of the Unist’ot’en resistance camp held a press conference in Vancouver on April 7, 2014 in response to leaked information that the Provincial government is preparing an injunction against the camp. The camp is in Wet’suwet’en territory in northern BC on the route of the Pacific Trail fracked gas pipeline.

Premier Christie Clark has staked her political future on liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, more accurately called liquefied fracked gas or LFG. But pipelines from the fracking fields in the province’s north-east must pass through unceded Indigenous territory on the way to the coast. They therefore require the free, prior and informed consent of the people of those lands; consent they do not have and will not receive from the Unist’ot’en and the other Wet’suwet’en hereditary clans.

“While the elected leadership of some Indian bands have signed agreements regarding the Pacific Trail Pipeline, Wet’suwet’en hereditary clans have jurisdiction over their territories” says Freda Huson “The Unist’ot’en are standing up for our territory, and protecting Mother Earth on a global scale by keeping fracked gas in the ground.”

Huson asserts that both indigenous law and the Canadian Supreme Court Delgamuukw decision prevents Indian band councils from unilaterally authorizing projects on Unist’ot’en land. She asserts that the Wet’suwet’en hereditary clans have the right to free, prior and informed consent — the right to say no — regarding any major projects, such as pipelines, on their unceded territory.

Resistance camp spokespeople Freda Huson and Toghestiy were in Vancouver after attending two historic gatherings of Indigenous land defenders and climate justice activists. The first was in Victoria March 29 to 31 and the second April 4th and 6th in Vancouver. The gatherings brought together hundreds of people opposing fracked gas and oilsands bitumen pipelines for joint training and strategy development.”

Keep up the good work Warriors Yinka Dini!!!

On April 22nd, a group of ranchers, farmers and tribal

communities from along the Keystone XL tar sands

pipeline route, called the Cowboy Indian Alliance, will

ride into Washington DC and set up camp near the White

House to tell President Obama to reject the pipeline.

“On April 26th, thousands of people will meet in Washington DC to stand with pipeline fighters from the front lines to send a final, unmistakable message to President Obama that it’s time to Reject Keystone XL and Protect our Land Water and Climate.

On April 26th at 11 AM, we will meet at the encampment on the National Mall, and march together to present a hand-painted tipi to President Obama. This tipi will represent our hope that he will reject the pipeline, and our promise that we will protect our land and water if he chooses to let the pipeline move forward.”

“After severely injuring Peter Driscal in an empty parking lot, troublemaker Cole Matthews is in major trouble. But instead of jail time, Cole is given an alternative: a one-year banishment to a remote Alaskan island. This program—called Circle Justice—is based on Native American traditions that provide healing for the criminal mind. To avoid serious jail time, Cole resolves to go. While there, Cole is mauled by a mysterious white bear and left for dead. Thoughts of his abusive parents, helpless Peter, and his violent anger cause him to examine the root of his troubled ways.

Author Ben Mikaelson delivers a poignant depiction of the vicious cycle of violence and one boy’s journey to healing.”

Spirit Bear Essays from Mrs. Donato’s
Grade 7 Reading Class

http://bcspiritbear.com/spirit-bear-hibernating-live/

Connecticut Students

Students around the world studied Apollo, the Hibernating Spirit Bear, from their classrooms that provided our Ustream Live Stream of Apollo. We now have a page dedicated to their stories and inspirations; http://bcspiritbear.com/stories/apollo_essays/

Here’s a few excerpts:

“-The Spirit Bear is an amazing creature. Through reading the book, Touching Spirit Bear, and watching these postings on Apollo’s website, my eyes have been opened to a whole new world”. BECKY

“-There is a very special bear that most people don’t know about. It is called the Kermode, and it needs our help! This beautiful animal lives in British Columbia and is in danger of extinction. Hunters shoot bears as if they are nothing, but these white bears are a rare type of black bear.” MADDY

“The bears are a white/cream color with a yellowish tint to their fur. This tint is due to their diet, as 95% of it consists of salmon. The other 5% of their diet is comprised of fruits, nuts, and insects. When the bear is born, it weighs about a half a pound, but it reaches approximately 300 pounds at maturity. Mothers of these cubs are very protective as they teach them the necessary survival skills. The Kermode bear is very loving and wouldn’t attack a person unless they felt threatened”. GABY

Happy Easter from Apollo

BCspiritbear.com has been in hibernation, much like Apollo, the hibernating Spirit Bear, waking up in time for Easter.

We’ve been busy with other projects for the last four years, since we Live Streamed “Apollo, the Hibernating Spirit Bear” from his winter den during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Now we’re pulling out the stops and digging into our vast collection of Live Stream archives to bring you many videos of Apollo and other Kermode Bears that live along the beautiful Nisga’a Highway 113.

Watch for continually added White Bear videos on http://bcspiritbear.com/spirit-bear-videos/

Check out our new Great Bear Rainforest page!

We’ll also be setting up an educational page for University/School researchers, providing hundreds of hours of exclusive footage of the only Hibernating Spirit Bear in the world! I will create another post as soon as it’s up.

Enjoy!
